Summer 2023

Embracing New Beginnings

““And suddenly you know…it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginnings.” – Meister Eckhart
Here we are knocking on the sweet doors of summer, celebrating graduations and commencement ceremonies, planning our vacations and getaways, preparing to entertain family and friends all while enjoying the sweet rays that the Summer Solstice brings. I want to bring your attention to the Summer Solstice. The Summer Solstice is represented by new beginnings and change for many people, this is no secret. In fact, this day has been celebrated with festivals, rituals, and midsummer celebrations for centuries. In ancient times, the Summer Solstice was marked as the day to begin planting and harvesting crops. This is the reason it is connected to fertility and new beginnings. Much like the Summer Solstice, South Baltimore Learning Center (SBLC) is also embracing a new beginning.
Together we all walk the path of creating a distinct learning environment that is safe, supportive, and intentional in practice. Here at SBLC, we have come to understand the importance of addressing social emotional issues that prevent our learners from meeting academic success. I am excited to share new workshop offerings available to our learners, community members, and staff. We hope these workshops provide participants the opportunity to self-reflect and assess, learn effective strategies and tools to support mental health and educate others. To that end, it takes a village to raise a village. Here at SBLC, we are fully committed to our mission and vision and fully accept this challenge. Below are a few new beginnings that we are excited to announce. Join us for upcoming dates if you can.
In closing, thank you for your continued support of SBLC | Learning Works. We are excited about the Summer Learning Opportunities and invite you to learn more by accessing our website. Do not forget to like, love, and follow our content on our social media platforms. Have an amazing summer.
All the best,
Melissa Smith
Interim Executive Director
We Need Your Support
As we close out our fiscal year, we are just shy of our individual giving goal for the year. Can we count on your support to help us reach our goal of raising $5,000 by the end of the month?
Your donations are crucial to support the everyday operations of SBLC as we provide completely free classes and programs to your neighbors in Baltimore City working toward education and career goals.
We are also aiming to raise enough to provide a year-end teambuilding event for the SBLC board and staff to strengthen connections and recharge as we get ready to approach a new year of learning and growth.
Celebrating the First Year of Train Up!

May marked the end of the first year of SBLC‘s partnership in Baltimore City’s Train Up program, and this milestone called for a celebration! We gathered to recognize the success of more than 50 SBLC learners enrolled in this program, which connects unemployed and underemployed Baltimore City residents with free job training and skills essential to the city’s growing industries.
