Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the South Baltimore Learning Center. Below you will see the descriptions of each of the different volunteer opportunities we offer.
Interested volunteers can fill out and submit an application or contact Judith Moreland at jmoreland@southbaltimorelearns.org to learn more about our positions.
Adult Literacy Tutor
Volunteers work one-on-one with adults with very low reading abilities. With support from the Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator and the Director of Education, tutor pairs work together to determine needs and curriculum. The opportunity for one-on-one attention boosts self-confidence for many learners who have had negative experiences in the classroom environment. SBLC requires all Adult Literacy Tutors to attend a free training session before being paired with a learner. The minimum commitment is 1-2 hours per week for one year.
Classroom Assistant
Volunteers work directly with the instructor of one of our Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, or GED level classes offered in the fall, winter, and spring semesters. Assistants support the instructor of the class by providing small group instruction for learners, offering individual tutoring to learners needing extra help, and much more. SBLC provides a free training session. The time commitment is 1-2 class sessions per week for one semester.
Computer Lab Tutor
SBLC’s computer lab gives adult learners access to the programs and things they need to complete homework assignments and improve their computer skills. Volunteers working in the computer lab make themselves available to our learners who are in need of help with homework or other assignments on the computer. Responsibilities include assisting learners with basic skills such as writing a resume in Microsoft Word and conducting job searches on the internet, ensuring that learners sign in and out of the lab, and monitoring use to ensure appropriate behavior. The time commitment is 2 hours per week and no experience is necessary.
Drop-In Tutor Lab
Volunteers working in SBLC’s Drop-in Tutor Lab assist learners in any of our programs. Drop-in tutors assist staff and instructors, working mostly one-on-one with learners, answering questions and helping learners develop specific skills. Learners that come to the Drop-in Lab are typically sent by their instructor for extra help or come on their own seeking additional face time with either instructor or tutor. The minimum time commitment is a 2-hour weekly session for one semester.
Special Events Volunteer
SBLC has three major events throughout the year: our annual Gala, Learner Recognition, and Volunteer Recognition. Volunteers are always needed to ensure that each event runs smoothly. Volunteers set-up, clean up, sell raffle tickets, monitor booths, distribute fliers and assist with several other activities.
